3 out of 5 stars

Aspiring’s premise is extremely intriguing. The moment I read the synopsis I was interested.

Astrid’s writing is very crisp, clean and flows smoothly. Making this a pleasant, easy read. The characters are described perfectly, well rounded and with great back stories. The amount of plot vs dialog is distributed perfectly throughout.

All around, well written

Unfortunately the execution of this story fell short for me.

After reading the synopsis which starts with “A coven of witches plots to over throw a kingdom” I was expecting an action pact read, with a splash of romance…which was not the case.

I found this story was almost confused on whether it was meant to be a fantasy story full of evil witches with one to stand in their way, or a full on light romance.

It started off great with Elisabeth finding out she has powers herself, while her mother was fighting for her life on her unfortunate death bed. Elizabeth knowing she is untrained and needs to learn how to use and control her powers. This had me fully invested as a reader! Until the part where she is receiving the proper training is grazed over and the story becomes her and her crush showing and admitting their lover for each other.

I personally was looking for that witchy adventure and excitement that the synopsis promised… not receiving the true thrill until the end of the book.

Now, that being said. I know this is not a stand alone novel. There will be a sequel and I am sure not only the characters but the plot will thicken as it goes. But with such a strong synopsis tied to this first novel I was expecting more from this story. Which could put off any reader from picking up the second books, expecting the lack-luster of action to be carried on to the sequel.

Please keep in mind these are my own opinions. I am not dragging this lovely author by any means. As mentioned, her all around writing was absolutely fantastic.

Where something may not have been what I was expecting, doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy it yourself.

I don’t know how many times I have read or seen a negative book review, still held interested, picked up the book and absolutely adored it.

Aspiring may be your perfect cup of tea!

And of course thank you all for reading.

The Black Orchids is chilling, yet sweet.

Ellie’s past is haunting her! You can feel the terrifying memories radiating off the page. Yet her present is full of positive vibes, with new friends and a potential love.

I am honestly shocked that this is Ishita’s debut novel!

It was fantastic! Covering both your dark and eerie while having a light, fluffy side as well. The writing was crisp and smooth making it a delightfully easy read.

Keeping you on your toes. Wanting to know who or what the figure hiding in the shadows is!

I love supporting indie authors and would most definitely recommend this read!

And of course thank you all for reading.

The Silhouette by William Ray Middleton

Anastasia’s been flushed to the dark, hiding from the world in the shadows, after a ghastly accident.

What would happen if these two connected?

The Silhouette has a Phantom of the Opera vibe, which of course I was completely digging.

This Lovecraftian romance will pull you in.

Jack is such a kind-hearted soul. Obviously why he is living his best life possible.

Anastasia was dealt such an unfair hand in life. Again, she has such a soft, loving soul. Seeing her feel the need to hide from the world is heart breaking.

Jack was meant to meet Anastasia. He wouldn’t stop caring, he wouldn’t give up on her. He knows Anastasia needs to stop hiding and start living her life again. The relationship these characters develop is extraordinary and truly inspiring.

The meaning of beauty truly runs deeper then skin.

The Silhouette is a fast, easy read. Packed with love able characters… and some so not love able.

William’s writing is exceptional, you won’t be able to stop reading.

The Silhouette will become a craving. Needing to know exactly what happened to Anastasia and how extensive her injuries are.

Another incredible masterpiece by an indie author.

Looking forward to future work by William Ray Middleton!

And of course thank you all for reading.

“What does it take to believe in the unbelievable?”

4 out of 5 stars

Lionel might be a reporter, but he would make an excellent detective.

I am a sucker for a good thriller and Ghosts of Gotham had me hooked right from the beginning, it was intense and fast paced. The twist around 30% in had me buzzing. I don’t know how Craig could have made it any more exciting, yet he did just that.

Lionel faces some extreme moments and will cross paths with some extraordinary people.

This book is hard to explain without giving any spoilers, but Craig has created a fierce world.

I truly believe so many people will admire this read.

An action packed mystery, paranormal, thriller… twisted with fantasy. How can you pass that up?

A Gentlewoman’s Guide to Murder by Victoria Hamilton

London, 1810 and Miss Emmeline St. Germaine is doing right in the world!

Along side other lovely ladies, Emmeline is doing her part to save orphaned children and scullery maids who are being abused by men, for their own disgusting pleasures.

thumbnail_IMG_2007Emmeline pays a visit to knight, Sir Henry Claybourne, holding a knife to his neck. Warning him of his own wrong doing with his scullery maid.

Shortly after Emmeline’s visit, Sir Henry was murdered.

Leaving Regency London shaken with fear, knowing a murder or murders are on the loose.

Emmeline is concerned that perhaps the true assassin witnessed her at the home.

Needing to be mindful where she treads. Miss Emmeline needs to make sure her hidden identity is not revealed and that she herself is not held guilty for Claybourne’s murder.

4 out of 5 stars

I will start by saying as mentioned above men are using scullery maids for their own personal pleasures. Trigger warnings for physical abuse towards young girls. I will add that Victoria does so in a very gentle way and does’t go deep into details during these parts throughout the book.

At first I found the pace of this book to be a bit slow. I was concerned I was going to lose interest quickly.

Yet again, I was wrong! It didn’t take long and I was sucked in.

Emmeline is a strong, bold, intelligent young lady. She knows the events happening around her are wrong and will not stand for it. Even when people are doing everything in their strength to turn her in an alternative direction. Believing that no women has a place in what she’s trying to accomplish. A strong female protagonist is always refreshing and enjoyable to read, and Miss Emmeline St. Germaine is exactly that!

A Gentlewoman’s Guide to Murder may have started out a bit slower but Victoria sends you down many different pathways throughout this book. Keeping you on your toes with each and every twist and turn.

A very enjoyable read. It gave me tons of Sherlock Holmes vibes mixed with a gentle classic.

Very well done!

“For Fig’s dad, hurricane season brings the music”.

“For Fig, hurricane season brings the possibility of disaster”.

My own description would not do this breathtaking middle grade justice! The written synopsis gives you a peak at everything you need, without giving spoilers.

5 out of 5 stars!… No, scratch that! 10 out of 5 stars.

You think the cover is absolutely stunning, right? Wait until you dive in! The guts of this story! How else can I put it…. you will fall in love!

There is so much emotion packed into this novel. My heart is still so full and warm from the moment I set it down.

Fig loves her father unconditionally, but hates herself when she feels anger towards him. This is completely understandable with the situation she faces. She wants more then anything to understand her father better. To know exactly where his brain goes on the “not so great” days.

Her father knows things are not perfect but is almost blind to just how bad it really is. He loves his daughter, double that!… But it’s not until things start to unwind that he realises just how bad it’s got. He will stop at nothing to make things right, to make things better!. They may not ever be “normal” or “perfect”, but he’s willing to work as hard as he needs to make it their kind of “normal” and their kind of “perfect”.

Fig and her dad are not alone! Between Fig’s best friend and the most wonderful, softhearted neighbour that just moved in. They will succeed!.. They have to succeed!

This will be a forever favourite!

Nicole Melleby has absolutely blown me away with her fantastic writing! I can not wait to see what more hits the shelves by her.

5 out of 5 stars!

Being the avid reader I am, I have always been sceptical of wordless picture books.  I couldn’t understand the reason for a wordless book. Children’s book or not, it just didn’t make any sense to me.

What is a book without words?

That is until I sat down to read “The Brain Storm” …with my two most wonderful boys!

Their expressions said it all.

A wordless book opens the story to your own interpretation.

After flipping through the book I asked my oldest who is nearing 10 years old, for his thoughts on the story and what he thought it meant.  It was incredible to see just how close our ideas were.

I can’t wait till I can sit down with my youngest when he is a bit older to get his interpretation. He’s only 2… just a little too young to get feedback from just yet.

What’s even more amazing is no matter how many times you flip through this book, you will have a different story run through your imagination each time. Depending on your mood in that moment.

We will be able to enjoy this story for years to come and never get tired of it!

Wordless children books—– Perhaps my age was getting the best of me. Maybe I was losing connection with my own imagination.

One things for sure… The Brain Storm changed that!

A Gentlewoman’s Guide to Murder by Victoria Hamilton

51tjECuN8KL._SX326_BO1,204,203,200_

Scandal and slayings among Regency London’s elite

The shocking murder of Sir Henry Claybourne leaves Regency London shaken and horror-struck. But for genteel spinster Miss Emmeline St. Germaine, the crime slices far too close to home. Just hours before the knight’s death she held a dagger to him, threatening him to stay silent as she rescued a scullery maid he had procured for his pleasure.

Did the man―or woman―who murdered the knight know of her visit? Her secret identity at risk, her reputation and life in jeopardy, Emmeline must solve the crime or face scandalous exposure and ruination, or worse―the hangman’s noose―for a crime she did not commit.

Ghosts of Gotham by Craig Schaefer

Irresistibly drawn to mysteries, if only to debunk them, reporter Lionel Page exposes supernatural frauds, swindlers, and charlatans. His latest case is an obsession—at least for an ancient and wealthy heiress: verify the authenticity of a lost Edgar Allan Poe manuscript circulating through New York City’s literary underworld. But the shrewd Regina Dunkle offers more than money. It’s a pact. Fulfill her request, and Lionel’s own notorious buried past, one he’s been running from since he was a child, will remain hidden.

As Lionel’s quest begins, so do the warnings. And where rare books go, murder follows. It’s only when Lionel meets enigmatic stranger Madison Hannah, his personal usher into the city’s secret history, that he realizes he’s being guided by a force more powerful than logic…and that he isn’t just following a story. He is the story.

Now that the true purpose of his mission is revealing itself in the most terrifying ways, it may finally be time for Lionel to believe in the unbelievable.

5 out or 5 stars

Starting Red I immediately started to feel my anxiety raise. Abigail gave me such an over whelming feeling of unease. That feeling quickly increased to panic and terror. When reading you can’t just simply cover your eyes during a scary part like you can during a movie. I found myself terrified to go on but yet needing to know how it ends.

Red kept me on the edge of me set and my heart pounding so hard, as if it was trying to leap right out of my chest.

Red certainly packs a haunting punch and will leave you completely filled with jitters. How it is even possible to deliver this much horror in a merely 51 pages is astounding!

Kelly’s writing will inject your brain with all sorts of new fears!

If your love is psychological thrillers, Kelly will easily become a new favourite.

A perfect read for around the Halloween season especially, if you are into that seasonal reading.

Enjoy!
