“What does it take to believe in the unbelievable?”

4 out of 5 stars

Lionel might be a reporter, but he would make an excellent detective.

I am a sucker for a good thriller and Ghosts of Gotham had me hooked right from the beginning, it was intense and fast paced. The twist around 30% in had me buzzing. I don’t know how Craig could have made it any more exciting, yet he did just that.

Lionel faces some extreme moments and will cross paths with some extraordinary people.

This book is hard to explain without giving any spoilers, but Craig has created a fierce world.

I truly believe so many people will admire this read.

An action packed mystery, paranormal, thriller… twisted with fantasy. How can you pass that up?

A Gentlewoman’s Guide to Murder by Victoria Hamilton

London, 1810 and Miss Emmeline St. Germaine is doing right in the world!

Along side other lovely ladies, Emmeline is doing her part to saveย orphaned children and scullery maids who are being abused by men, for their own disgusting pleasures.

thumbnail_IMG_2007Emmeline pays a visit to knight, Sir Henry Claybourne, holding a knife to his neck. Warning him of his own wrong doing with his scullery maid.

Shortly after Emmeline’s visit, Sir Henry was murdered.

Leaving Regency London shaken with fear, knowing a murder or murders are on the loose.

Emmeline is concerned that perhaps the true assassin witnessed her at the home.

Needing to be mindful where she treads. Miss Emmeline needs to make sure her hidden identity is not revealed and that she herself is not held guilty for Claybourne’s murder.

4 out of 5 stars

I will start by saying as mentioned above men are using scullery maids for their own personal pleasures. Trigger warnings for physical abuse towards young girls. I will add that Victoria does so in a very gentle way and does’t go deep into details during these parts throughout the book.

At first I found the pace of this book to be a bit slow. I was concerned I was going to lose interest quickly.

Yet again, I was wrong! It didn’t take long and I was sucked in.

Emmeline is a strong, bold, intelligent young lady. She knows the events happening around her are wrong and will not stand for it. Even when people are doing everything in their strength to turn her in an alternative direction. Believing that no women has a place in what she’s trying to accomplish. A strong female protagonist is always refreshing and enjoyable to read, and Miss Emmeline St. Germaine is exactly that!

A Gentlewoman’s Guide to Murder may have started out a bit slower but Victoria sends you down many different pathways throughout this book. Keeping you on your toes with each and every twist and turn.

A very enjoyable read. It gave me tons of Sherlock Holmes vibes mixed with a gentle classic.

Very well done!

“For Figโ€™s dad, hurricane season brings the music”.

“For Fig, hurricane season brings the possibility of disaster”.

My own description would not do this breathtaking middle grade justice! The written synopsis gives you a peak at everything you need, without giving spoilers.ย ย

5 out of 5 stars!… No, scratch that! 10 out of 5 stars.ย

You think the cover is absolutely stunning, right? Wait until you dive in! The guts of this story! How else can I put it…. you will fall in love!

There is so much emotion packed into this novel. My heart is still so full and warm from the moment I set it down.

Fig loves her father unconditionally, but hates herself when she feels anger towards him. This is completely understandable with the situation she faces. She wants more then anything to understand her father better. To know exactly where his brain goes on the “not so great” days.

Her father knows things are not perfect but is almost blind to just how bad it really is. He loves his daughter, double that!… But it’s not until things start to unwind that he realises just how bad it’s got. He will stop at nothing to make things right, to make things better!. They may not ever be “normal” or “perfect”, but he’s willing to work as hard as he needs to make it their kind of “normal” and their kind of “perfect”.

Fig and her dad are not alone! Between Fig’s best friend and the most wonderful, softhearted neighbour that just moved in. They will succeed!.. They have to succeed!

This will be a forever favourite!

Nicole Melleby has absolutely blown me away with her fantastic writing! I can not wait to see what more hits the shelves by her.

5 out of 5 stars!

Being the avid reader I am, I have always been sceptical of wordless picture books.ย  I couldn’t understand the reason for a wordless book. Children’s book or not, it just didn’t make any sense to me.

What is a book without words?ย

That is until I sat down to read “The Brain Storm” …with my two most wonderful boys!

Their expressions said it all.

A wordless book opens the story to your own interpretation.

After flipping through the book I asked my oldest who is nearing 10 years old, for his thoughts on the story and what he thought it meant.ย  It was incredible to see just how close our ideas were.

I can’t wait till I can sit down with my youngest when he is a bit older to get his interpretation. He’s only 2… just a little too young to get feedback from just yet.

What’s even more amazing is no matter how many times you flip through this book, you will have a different story run through your imagination each time. Depending on your mood in that moment.

We will be able to enjoy this story for years to come and never get tired of it!

Wordless children books—– Perhaps my age was getting the best of me. Maybe I was losing connection with my own imagination.

One things for sure… The Brain Storm changed that!

5 out of 5 Stars!

Such a delightful read!

Adorable, fuzzy and incredibly refreshing… it will melt your heart!

Amy and her two kids are the absolute perfect trio! And each character in this novel will find a way to nuzzle into your heart.

Any Mother, single or not can relate to Amy Byler. I don’t think I have ever met a Mom that would say no to such an enchanting holiday as this…. I could only dream!

Kelly Harms has created such a encouraging read with “The Overdue Life of Amy Byler”. Taking time for yourself is never easy when you’re a Mother. Your children become your whole entire world. But know that you can and don’t feel the guilt!

A Gentlewoman’s Guide to Murder by Victoria Hamilton

Scandal and slayings among Regency London’s elite

The shocking murder of Sir Henry Claybourne leaves Regency London shaken and horror-struck. But for genteel spinster Miss Emmeline St. Germaine, the crime slices far too close to home. Just hours before the knight’s death she held a dagger to him, threatening him to stay silent as she rescued a scullery maid he had procured for his pleasure.

Did the manโ€•or womanโ€•who murdered the knight know of her visit? Her secret identity at risk, her reputation and life in jeopardy, Emmeline must solve the crime or face scandalous exposure and ruination, or worseโ€•the hangman’s nooseโ€•for a crime she did not commit.

Ghosts of Gotham by Craig Schaefer

516SoYhVTCL

Irresistibly drawn to mysteries, if only to debunk them, reporter Lionel Page exposes supernatural frauds, swindlers, and charlatans. His latest case is an obsessionโ€”at least for an ancient and wealthy heiress: verify the authenticity of a lost Edgar Allan Poe manuscript circulating through New York Cityโ€™s literary underworld. But the shrewd Regina Dunkle offers more than money. Itโ€™s a pact. Fulfill her request, and Lionelโ€™s own notorious buried past, one heโ€™s been running from since he was a child, will remain hidden.

As Lionelโ€™s quest begins, so do the warnings. And where rare books go, murder follows. Itโ€™s only when Lionel meets enigmatic stranger Madison Hannah, his personal usher into the cityโ€™s secret history, that he realizes heโ€™s being guided by a force more powerful than logicโ€ฆand that he isnโ€™t just following a story. Heย isย the story.

Now that the true purpose of his mission is revealing itself in the most terrifying ways, it may finally be time for Lionel to believe in the unbelievable.

5 out or 5 stars

Starting Red I immediately started to feel my anxiety raise. Abigail gave me such an over whelming feeling of unease. That feeling quickly increased to panic and terror. When reading you can’t just simply cover your eyes during a scary part like you can during a movie.ย I found myself terrified to go on but yet needing to know how it ends.

Red kept me on the edge of me set and my heart pounding so hard, as if it was trying to leap right out of my chest.

Red certainly packs a haunting punch and will leave you completely filled with jitters. How it is even possible to deliver this much horror in a merely 51 pages is astounding!

Kelly’s writing will inject your brain with all sorts of new fears!

If your love is psychological thrillers, Kelly will easily become a new favourite.

A perfect read for around the Halloween season especially, if you are into that seasonal reading.

Enjoy!

And of course thank you all for reading.

5 out of 5 stars! – Incredibly charming!

I adore novels written in a past setting, exactly what I was expecting Courting Mr. Lincoln to be… since it’s based in the 1800’s, but this was completely different. Louis has written a book in the modern day, set in the past, yet reads as a genuine classic……Brillant!

Miss Todd is smart, independent and has such a strong knowledge of politics. Truly a well rounded young lady.

Lincoln’s also smart, determined and very hardworking. He has goals and is working towards them. Although he is missing proper manners and does not have the perfect gentlemen style, just yet. Lack of funds doesn’t help with that situation, but a great friend could become very helpful with that.

This is where Joshua Speed comes in. He is truly wonderful! (Spoiler… I think Speed wasย  my favourite character!).ย Speed is an incredible man, with so much warmth in his heart. Speed keeps a great pride for those he is close to, especially Lincoln.

Louis Bayard has created such a marvellous read! and I couldn’t be happier to have this wonderful addition to my shelves.

Courting Mr.Lincoln by Louis Bayard

When Mary Todd meets Abraham Lincoln in Springfield in theย winter of 1840, he is on no oneโ€™s short list to beย president. A country lawyer livingย above a dry goods shop, he is lacking both money and manners, and his gift forย oratory surprises those who meet him. Mary, a quick, self-possessed debutanteย with an interest in debates andย elections, at first finds him an enigma. โ€œI canย only hope,โ€ she tells his roommate, the handsome, charming Joshuaย Speed, โ€œthatย his waters being so very still, they also run deep.โ€

Itโ€™s not long, though, beforeย she sees the Lincoln that Speed knows: an amiable, profound man who, despiteย his awkwardness, has a gentle wit to match his genius, and who respects her keenย political mind. But as herย relationship with Lincoln deepens, she must confrontย his inseparable friendship with Speed, who has taught hisย roommate how toย dance, dress, and navigate the polite society of Springfield.

Told in the alternating voicesย of Mary Todd and Joshua Speed, and inspired by historical events,ย Courting Mr. Lincolnย creates aย sympathetic and complex portrait of Mary unlike any that has come before; aย moving portrayal of the deep and very real connection betweenย the two men; andย most of all, an evocation of the unformed man who would grow into one of theย nationโ€™s most beloved presidents.ย Louis Bayard, a master storyteller, deliversย here a page-turning tale of love, longing, and forbidden possibilities

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City.

Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down in the city that never sleeps. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, andโ€”with a little encouragement from her friendsโ€”a few blind dates. When one man in particular makes quick work of Amyโ€™s heart, she risks losing herself completely in the unexpected escape, and as the summer comes to an end, Amy realizes too late that she must make an impossible decision: stay in this exciting new chapter of her life, or return to the life she left behind.

But before she can choose, a crisis forces the two worlds together, and Amy must stare down a future where she could lose both sides of herself, and every dream sheโ€™s ever nurtured, in the beat of a heart.

Hurricane Season by Nicole Melleby

For Figโ€™s dad, hurricane season brings the music.
For Fig, hurricane season brings the possibility of disaster.

Fig, a sixth grader, loves her dad and the home they share in a beach-side town. She does not love the long months of hurricane season. Her father, a once-renowned piano player, sometimes goes looking for the music in the middle of a storm. Hurricane months bring unpredictable good and bad days. More than anything, Fig wants to see the world through her fatherโ€™s eyes, so she takes an art class to experience life as an artist does. Then Figโ€™s dad shows up at school, confused and looking for her. Not only does the classย notย bring Fig closer to understanding him, it brings social services to their door.

As the walls start to fall around her, Fig is sure itโ€™s up to her alone to solve her fatherโ€™s problems and protect her familyโ€™s privacy. But with the help of her best friend, a cute girl at the library, and a surprisingly kind new neighbour, Fig learns she isnโ€™t as alone as she once thought . . . and begins to compose her own definition of family.

Nicole Mellebyโ€™sย Hurricane Seasonย is a radiant and tender novel about taking risks and facing danger, about friendship and art, and about growing up and coming out. And more than anything else, it is a story about loveโ€”both its limits and its incredible healing power.
