5 out of 5 stars! – Incredibly charming!

I adore novels written in a past setting, exactly what I was expecting Courting Mr. Lincoln to be… since it’s based in the 1800’s, but this was completely different. Louis has written a book in the modern day, set in the past, yet reads as a genuine classic……Brillant!

Miss Todd is smart, independent and has such a strong knowledge of politics. Truly a well rounded young lady.

Lincoln’s also smart, determined and very hardworking. He has goals and is working towards them. Although he is missing proper manners and does not have the perfect gentlemen style, just yet. Lack of funds doesn’t help with that situation, but a great friend could become very helpful with that.

This is where Joshua Speed comes in. He is truly wonderful! (Spoiler… I think Speed wasย  my favourite character!).ย Speed is an incredible man, with so much warmth in his heart. Speed keeps a great pride for those he is close to, especially Lincoln.

Louis Bayard has created such a marvellous read! and I couldn’t be happier to have this wonderful addition to my shelves.

Courting Mr.Lincoln by Louis Bayard

When Mary Todd meets Abraham Lincoln in Springfield in theย winter of 1840, he is on no oneโ€™s short list to beย president. A country lawyer livingย above a dry goods shop, he is lacking both money and manners, and his gift forย oratory surprises those who meet him. Mary, a quick, self-possessed debutanteย with an interest in debates andย elections, at first finds him an enigma. โ€œI canย only hope,โ€ she tells his roommate, the handsome, charming Joshuaย Speed, โ€œthatย his waters being so very still, they also run deep.โ€

Itโ€™s not long, though, beforeย she sees the Lincoln that Speed knows: an amiable, profound man who, despiteย his awkwardness, has a gentle wit to match his genius, and who respects her keenย political mind. But as herย relationship with Lincoln deepens, she must confrontย his inseparable friendship with Speed, who has taught hisย roommate how toย dance, dress, and navigate the polite society of Springfield.

Told in the alternating voicesย of Mary Todd and Joshua Speed, and inspired by historical events,ย Courting Mr. Lincolnย creates aย sympathetic and complex portrait of Mary unlike any that has come before; aย moving portrayal of the deep and very real connection betweenย the two men; andย most of all, an evocation of the unformed man who would grow into one of theย nationโ€™s most beloved presidents.ย Louis Bayard, a master storyteller, deliversย here a page-turning tale of love, longing, and forbidden possibilities

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City.

Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down in the city that never sleeps. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, andโ€”with a little encouragement from her friendsโ€”a few blind dates. When one man in particular makes quick work of Amyโ€™s heart, she risks losing herself completely in the unexpected escape, and as the summer comes to an end, Amy realizes too late that she must make an impossible decision: stay in this exciting new chapter of her life, or return to the life she left behind.

But before she can choose, a crisis forces the two worlds together, and Amy must stare down a future where she could lose both sides of herself, and every dream sheโ€™s ever nurtured, in the beat of a heart.

Hurricane Season by Nicole Melleby

For Figโ€™s dad, hurricane season brings the music.
For Fig, hurricane season brings the possibility of disaster.

Fig, a sixth grader, loves her dad and the home they share in a beach-side town. She does not love the long months of hurricane season. Her father, a once-renowned piano player, sometimes goes looking for the music in the middle of a storm. Hurricane months bring unpredictable good and bad days. More than anything, Fig wants to see the world through her fatherโ€™s eyes, so she takes an art class to experience life as an artist does. Then Figโ€™s dad shows up at school, confused and looking for her. Not only does the classย notย bring Fig closer to understanding him, it brings social services to their door.

As the walls start to fall around her, Fig is sure itโ€™s up to her alone to solve her fatherโ€™s problems and protect her familyโ€™s privacy. But with the help of her best friend, a cute girl at the library, and a surprisingly kind new neighbour, Fig learns she isnโ€™t as alone as she once thought . . . and begins to compose her own definition of family.

Nicole Mellebyโ€™sย Hurricane Seasonย is a radiant and tender novel about taking risks and facing danger, about friendship and art, and about growing up and coming out. And more than anything else, it is a story about loveโ€”both its limits and its incredible healing power.

Book Cover Buys

I know every book lover has heard the term “don’t judge a book by its cover”.. right?

Can you honestly sit there and say you have never done it?

We all have, I am pretty sure of that. How can you not, some covers just pull you in with their beauty. Isn’t that what the cover is there for, to give some sort of preview of what’s on the inside.

Although I don’t always believe judging a book by its cover is a bad thing. A lot of books I picked up just for their beautiful covers became some of my all time favourite reads. I have also found new favourite authors this way as well.

I will sayย  there are some types of covers that turn me away from the book, causing me not to pick it up. This I need to get over, who knows what amazing adventures I may be missing out on.

What are some cover buys you picked up? I would love to know, maybe I need to add them to my never-ending… slowly taking over the world list.

And of course thanks for reading

The Field Guide To The North American Teenager by Ben Philippe

***Advanced readers copy***

Norris Kaplan is an extremely witty black french Canadian teenager. Enjoying his typical teen years in Montreal, Canada. Until he was plucked from his comfortable home ofย  Montreal and moved to hot Austin, Texas.

Already unhappy with having to deal with all the changes of the move and not to mention the heat! Starting at a new high school was no dream either.

Along with Kaplan’s snarky teenager remarks that may get him in trouble, he startsย  catalogue everyone he meets. Nothing wrong with that… right?….at least he has some entertainment until he gets to run home to good ol’ Canada.

Until one day he meets Aarti, a girl he just can’t seem to place in any category.

Starting to think maybe his new life isn’t that bad. Norris begins to open up to the thought of staying in Austin.

But on prom night Norris makes a huge mistake and realises its time for him to stop hiding behind his sarcastic demeanour and make things right.

“It’s not that you can’t have an opinion. You just need to have less of them. People won’t always know when you’re joking”.

4.5 out of 5 stars

Ben created the perfect high school setting!

I felt as if I was plucked from my adult life and placed right back into the drama that was high school. This is not an easy environment to create, but Ben constructed it perfectly.

Cataloguing characters, groups, seasons, etc. really brought this field guide to life.

I would be lying if I didn’t say there wasn’t times that Norris didn’t drive me crazy. But I mean isn’t that sort of the point when it came to him as the main character?

Without giving names I will confess there is one character that really found a way into my heart. She is a huge reason for me devouring this book!

Oh and the humour!… absolutely hilarious. Constantly giggling to myself to bursting out laughing. Yet also having some truly serious moments, that you can’t take too lightly.

This is a such a fun, quirky read that deserves all the love.

Thank you so incredibly much to HarperCollins Canada for sending this hilarious read my way.

Why have I not thought about sharing this on here?!?!?!….

Mid January I reached out to my fellow Bookstagrammers to see if anyone was interested in taking part in a book club through Bookstagram (Instagram). I had such amazing feedback and now we are one large book club family!

Our name …Back Of The Bookshelf Book Club! — One heck of an awesome group, if I do say so myself.

The first book we chose was for February’s read. Giving everyone a chance to get their hands on the book if they didn’t already own it.

We are currently reading The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. This incredible read will be completed by the end of February.

Our group breaks the book up by chapters, reading so many chapters each week. Carrying the book throughout the full month. Each week we jump on Bookstagramย  together and discuss that weeks chapters.

The discussions sure can get heated, in the best way possible. Just shows how passionate we are about what we are reading.

We have already picked our read for March!!!… The Lost Girls of Paris by the amazing Pam Jenoff.

If you are interested in reading along… please do! And please let me know you are, so I can be sure to discuss the book with you as well. If you are interested in joining our group you can find me on Instagram. My handle is nichi.i_readpastmybedtime. You can also use the hashtag #backofthebookshelfbc on Instagram to find us.

Look forward to seeing you! And I will come on here each month and share our next read.

And of course thanks for reading!

Book Shopping

Who doesn’t love Book Shopping?

Oh how it warms my heart.

My most favourite place in the world is Chapters Indigo (It is the Canadian Barnes and Noble.. hehe).

As soon as I walk into Chapters it’s like walking into a warm hug! I know that sounds sappy but it’s true. All the gorgeous books, colors, cozy items. It truly is heaven on earth. Not to forget it is a great place for the whole family to enjoy AND the built-in Starbucks is A…MA…ZING.

Grab a delicious, nummy, HOT coffee and browse the world of books…. Mmmm. As I said HEAVEN.

Now Chapters is my favourite bookstore alive and I love the buzz of buying new books. But I am constantly on the hunt for amazing used bookstores as well. The nostalgia of walking around a store with all the used books that have been so well-loved and now will be passed on to another fellow book lover. I also personally love giving used books a new home. Don’t forget the smell, I love the smell of older books. Yes I will proudly admit I am a Book-sniffer. Don’t you hide, yes you out there! I know you do it too…. Yes I am looking at you!

So far one of my favourite used bookstores I have found in my area is called Wee Book Inn. So adorable, and each store has an adorable, cuddly, loving, fuzzy..CAT.ย Soooo sweet.

Online book shopping!…Eeeekkkkk.

Very exciting! The suspense while you wait for your order to come in. Sometimes even forgetting all that you purchased and being surprised all over again.

Doesn’t matter where you are buying from, being BookOutlet, Book Depository, Amazon, Chapters Online, etc…. as the list is never-ending. Online book shoppingย is a wonder.

I mean the books come right to your door. Which means you don’t even have the put the book you are currently reading down in order to get more BOOKS!

It is like Christmas with each package that comes in!

Now who are my library lovers out there?

I adore the library… unfortunately my local library has next to nothing on the shelves, they are just so bare. I rarely ever see a newer released book there either. BUT! that being said my boys and I still go, I still renew my card each year and I use their audiobook app as well. library’s are so important to have and it is critical in my eyes that we bring our children and show them the world of reading. Getting to pick up a book, reading the words on the page yet create a whole story in our minds. I would be lying if I didn’t say every now and then I don’t find a true hidden gem at my local library.

Where do you buy your books from?.. Maybe you don’t and you just use the library.

Share with me as I would love to hear!

And of course thank you all for reading

The Perfect Girlfriend by Karen Hamilton

Advanced readers copy

“YOUโ€™VE NEVER READ A LOVE STORY AS TWISTED AS THIS!”

Sweet Juliette loves Nate!

Nothing in the world will stop her from being with him. Not even Nate breaking up with her, 6 months ago….

I mean who does he think he is? Doesn’t he realise what he just gave up?

Juliette knows she has met the love of her life. She will go to any length to be as close as possible, at all times. She even started working as a flight attendant with the same airline Nate works for.

Nate is just clueless and Juliette will show him! He will be hers!

“Stick to the plan, fail to plan, plan to fail”.

5 out of 5 stars

Such an easy, brilliant read!

I cannot believe this is Karen’s fist novel. She was meant to write!

I know that Juliette is deranged and really you shouldn’t be rooting for her but Karen wrote her character so so well. I found at times I was feeling bad for her and the situation she was in. That is when you know you have discovered an amazing author, when they can make you feel, even for the “bad guys” in the story.

This book was so intense! Just when I thought I had figured out where the story was going a twist was thrown in. This happened multiple times throughout the novel. Karen’s writing constantly had me stretching my brain, so many incredible shifts in the story! Yet even with the fast pace, exciting story Iย  kept up throughout. Karen’s writing was so smooth and flawless.

I am excited to see what Karen creates next!

“I don’t believe that opposites attract; I’m sure it’s a myth”.

Belle’s Book Sleeves

What bookworm doesn’t travel with a book at all times?…Well most of the time anyhow.

A book sleeve is one of the best inventions created.

Travelling with your book and knowing it wont get damaged is the best feeling. Especially when you have taken the dust jacket off your hardcover wanting to keep it in great shape but then you worry about the books naked body!

I recently came across this new, up and coming Etsy shop that knows where it’s at when it comes to handmade book sleeves.

“Belle’s Book Sleeves”ย

Kelly is killing it left and right and selling out fast.

With new gorgeous, vibrant fabric patterns, FUR book sleeves (sooo plush!), liner color option on particular sleeves AND even starting “blind date with a book sleeve”. This is one shop you don’t want to miss out on.

I also can’t get over the theme. I mean correct me if I am wrong but Belle’s Book Sleeves gives me all the Beauty And The Beast vibes.

Shop name Belle and then the fur sleeves … come on that completely makes you think of the Beast… right?

Don’t take my word for it, go and check out her site. All I can say is —STUNNING!
