4 out of 5 stars! (for the whole collection)

First off I have to start by saying how proud I am of Nick! Nick is a fellow BookTuber and it’s always exciting to see people whom I consider friends making their dreams become a reality. Now to all my readers out there, although Nick is a friend this will not stop me from providing an honest review.

Graymatter is a fun collection! and by that I mean dark, gruesome, spooky but loads of fun. Some great concepts here! These short stories are those type of stories narrated by the main character that end with a big cliffhanger….leaving you wanting more. Oh and I can’t forget each has a great moral to the story as well.

While reading this collection I felt as if I was chilling with Nick while he told me some truly eerie stories. Nick has a way of writing different characters and really bringing their personality traits forward. For example one story is about a dognapper, he makes a living taking other people dogs and than just hangs at home until the owner puts out a reward. Once they do he jumps on it claiming his prize. The guy is an honest dirt-bag and I was appalled the whole time I read this story! Honestly, if you can feel those emotions while reading that’s when you know the author did something right. These are things you just don’t forget even after finishing the read.

There is one tiny negative that pulled my star rating back on this horror collection. Although an editor was hired there seems to be a lot that was missed. Spelling mistakes, grammar, repetitiveness and some sentences weren’t even proper English. Although I can understand these mistakes as everyone is human and while the author is pouring their thoughts and passions out onto paper it takes a lot of time to make the story crisp and clean. Multiple read through’s alone, even before editing (if it’s an option, which isn’t the case for most indie authors). That being said even after taking these steps and even hiring an editor a lot was missed. Although I am not one to talk negative about others or tell them how to do their job, I really feel whoever did edit this collection for Nick did not provide the service he paid for and I hope this won’t deter people from picking it up. Editing can really hurt an author! Some people won’t even finish a read or give it an awful review solely on the editing.

All in all honestly this collection was great! Again, Nick had great concepts, awesome characters and not to forget your mind and emotions will be stirred. I say it’s totally worth giving it a go. Also if you would like to check out my video review on my BookTube channel that would be awesome!

Thank you so much Nick for sending me a copy to read and review. I am so proud to own a physical copy and to have it sitting on my shelves. I can’t wait to see what else you have for us in the future.

Fanfreakingtastic!

In The Hills Above The Gristmill is one intense book.

Kalvin has shown his true talents as an author with this read. Which might I add is book one in a series I am now obviously VERY excited for. On top of this my mind is truly boggled knowing this is Kalvin’s debut novel!

The main character Paisley is absolutely fearless, she’s your ideal modern day paranormal investigator. At the request of the towns beloved preacher Hollis Grim, Paisley rushes to the very small, incredibly odd, extremely unusual town of Grey Water Ridge.

I was devoted to this read from the very first page…. Kalvin’s writing is immaculate. Each character introduced is so unique and different from the next. The story is eerie and the setting is purely chilling. I don’t think I have ever read a book where I was suspicious about so many characters all at once. Not once did I know for absolutely certain who was the true evil in this story….. Well maybe aside from one scene, but I guess you would have to read it for yourself to know what part I am talking about.

Never a bored moment in this book, the story never falls flat. Even while Kalvin provided some history on the town of Grey Water Ridge I was intrigued. Usually (for myself anyhow) when an author is trying to add that extra knowledge and incite into the plot I find it drags a bit. More like excess filler that doesn’t really need to be there and may create the reader to lose interest. That was not the case with In The Hills Above The Gristmill. The history added to the story, rivalries were present even back when and horrible things happened. This information only helps you understand this town and the people in it even more. I also enjoyed the direction Kalvin took while writing this into the story.

Highly recommend this read. I can’t wait for book two in the series….. Kalvin, if you’re reading this.. hurry up! ha..ha. I guess you can call me a big fan of his work!

5 out of 5 stars!

Better You Believe is a collection of short stories. All urban legends Tony has come across over the years, while on his own adventures.

Nothing better than the perfect scary story as a kid. What we may not realise at that age, is a lot of the stories that have circled around come from urban legends our parents or family members have heard.

Tony not only brought attention to urban legends I myself had never heard of. He brought them to life, putting his own little spin on them. These are tales that will stick with me for a very long time, perhaps even for life.

These bizarre, creepy, strange stories are very fast paced and will leave you itching for more of each.

Some of the characters are so relate-able and you can’t help but feel emotions along side them, some of these myths will come across very cheeky, but know that there is a good life lesson to learn in each. So be sure to pay attention to the underlining message.

Tony’s writing is so enjoyable. No added filler, no drawn out sections, great story development, the characters are done really well and as I mentioned each story is very fast paced. You will fly through this collection in no time while being entertained the whole time, you may even be shocked by some of the twists that come along.

Yes! Of course I would recommend Better You Believe.

5 out of 5 stars!

Sour is a mix of some of the urban legends you may have read in “Better You Believe”  all wrapped together in one perfect creepy bundle.

The moment I started to dive into Sour I thought… YES! This is it. I wanted more of these stories and I am getting just that.

Sam has to takes some drastic steps to try and rectify a huge loss after some very poor choices but again things may never be the same and might be better off just left alone.

I really enjoyed Sour, so happy I picked it up immediately after Better You Believe. It helped satisfy some of the thirst I had for more on these legends.

Again I would recommend Sour as well! I may even recommend reading them one after the other so everything is fresh in your mind….. Your welcome!

A unique read!

I am a fan of odd, eerie, gruesome reads and The Scrimshaw Worm hit on those themes well.

Your main character, Will seems like a really good guy. He will protect those that just can’t or won’t protect themselves, he also has a soft spot in his heart for some in his life. After a harsh yet passionate act Will’s choices have forced him to serve as a doctor on a Whaling Voyage, even though he promised himself never again. During his journey on the ship they save a women who seems to be a damsel in distress from a dyer situation. Shortly after, crew members start to disappear, some are attacked, some are killed and left for the rest of the crew to find and yet no one knows what’s happening.

The Scrimshaw Worm leaves you antsy to know what or who is attacking the crew.

I enjoyed The Scrimshaw Worm and I am happy I picked it up.

I only have a couple very small reasons why I took a star off my rating and please keep in mind these are my own opinions and you may not feel the same when picking up this read for yourself. These reasons also don’t take away from the story line, characters, plot or Daniel’s writing.

I found the down time in-between the action, although short and not drawn out, was very slow. I wanted to rush through those moments in order to get back to the action. Again this is most likely just me and it may show that the book was well written because I obviously wanted more. Also the down time was not just filler, it was information that was crucial to the story so I had to slow myself down and take it all in. My only other reason was that you got such a strong glimpse of who Will was back on the mainland and a sneak peak into one relationship in particular he held and I found that I missed not having that closure at the end of the story to see how things were off the waters.

All in all I would recommend this read. I think it will be unlike any of the novels you have in your collection currently.

5 out of 5 stars!

The Beast of Bodmin was absolutely hair-raising!

Edmondson had me hooked from the very first page.

Thrillers are my jam!… but putting a spin on it like this, man or beast? What a ride! Knowing a murderer was on the loose was nerve wrecking enough. Not knowing if it was human or some hungry animal had you at the edge of your seat.

Not only is Mark’s writing so easily devoured but the story and characters were executed perfectly. Your main character, Jo had already been through so much which only made her stronger, while also showing her vulnerable side. Although Jo is about to go through SO much more! This creates the perfect protagonist for the reader. Someone you can truly relate with and start to gain some type of emotions for, causing you to become a bit anxious to see if Jo survives in the end.

The characters that surrounded and supported Jo were also so lovely. This novel is truly character driven in the best way possible.

I found myself constantly trying to crack the case while reading, getting into the true mindset of a detective. At times I truly felt I had figured out exactly who or what was committing these murders. Just as I got to that point there was a large plot twist! This was the real gem of this story! … The Beast of Bodmin never got boring!

This will be a favourite of mine for years to come.

downloadIt’s New Year’s Eve 1980, and the students of DeAngelo High School are lacing up their skates for the All-Night New Year’s Lock-In at the Rollerville Roller Disco. Some of them just want to skate and dance the night away to the pounding disco music. Some want to pull a few pranks and have a few laughs. For others, like Dan Parsons, tonight is a chance to move on and forget about his ex-girlfriend, maybe even flirt with Denise, that cute girl behind the snack counter. It seems like nothing can go wrong. But there’s a massive blizzard raging outside, thick snow and ice are piling up against all the doors. There are those rumors that Rollerville was built over part of the old graveyard next door, and someone out there is watching. Also, a strange homeless man in the parking lot says that tonight will be the start of the so-called “Year of Blood.”A night of skating and New Year’s fun is about to turn into a night of violence and bloody mayhem in Disco Deathtrap.

A safe night turns to be a complete BLOODBATH!

Roubique has done it again! He has to be one of my all time favourite 80’s slasher authors.

Cameron has this way of creating these lively characters, memorable characters, puts them in this overwhelmingly terrifying situation. Some may give up, others will fight till the very end. Meanwhile the reader sits there biting their nails…. waiting to see who survives.

Like most 80’s slasher films you think you know who’s done it!….. But with Roubique’s evil masterpieces… you end up being so very, very wrong. Not only are you shocked on who it was, the murderers motives are gripping their backstories are so detailed. Cameron’s writing in itself is so extremely detailed. Be warned, these reads are not for squeamish people.

In Disco Deathtrap no one is safe! Only one way to find out who survives….

download (1)Ronnie has the perfect summer job at the Indian Hill Golf Course. All day he gets to ride around on mowers and golf carts, check out the beautiful drink cart girls, joke around with his best friend Mark, and get plenty of fresh air and sunlight. That all changes when a huge late spring hailstorm blows in one night, leaving the golf course in shambles. As they clean up all the limbs and downed trees, Ronnie and Mark learn about the Native American Kikawa tribe that was brutally massacred at the top of the hill near the seventeenth green, and the evil medicine man known as Chief Tomahawk who supposedly put a curse on the land. It seems that the curse may prove to be real as the golf course is dogged with bad luck, and a dark figure wearing a wooden Chief’s mask and a black-feathered headdress is watching them from the shadows. Now, in preparation for the biggest golf tournament of the year, Ronnie and the maintenance crew have to come in and work through the night. They are about to find out that Chief Tomahawk has returned, and he wants revenge for his slaughtered people.

The perfect summer job!… Or so Ronnie thought

Nightmares can hide anywhere… you never know when they will strike, perhaps for an awful revenge!

Golf Curse was such a wild ride! Indian Hill Golf Course really does sound like the perfect summer job, that is until the stories of the land being cursed starts to add up. Enough to terrify the believers anyhow… maybe not so much for the non-believers.

Again the detail in Roubique’s novels astound me. Each character is perfectly placed with a good amount of a background story, helping you decide who the trouble makers are and who the goody too-shoes are. I don’t know about you but I find myself already planning out who may be the first to go simply based on their personalities. Than comes in this whole story behind Indian Hill Golf Course and why they say it’s cursed.

They do say write what you know, which is exactly what Roubique has done. Having the knowledge from working at a golf course himself and man has it worked out for him.

Cameron’s work will keep your heart pounding. Be prepared!

An author I highly recommend across the board. Oh and I can’t forget! His mind blowing covers are his own incredible paintings.

5 out of 5 stars – for both

Cameron has done it! He is a new favourite author of mine.

I honestly had never read a 80’s slasher horror read before. To be honest I never even realised anything such as this existed within sub genres in horror. Until I took part in the BookTube’s: Bloody Beach Readatlong. Thank goodness for this readalong held by incredible BookTubers because I have now found one of my favourite type of reads within horror.

Kill River and Kill River 2 read exactly as 80’s slasher films. The first half is a slower paced read. Giving the perfect moment to introduce the characters, get a feel for their personalities and what they were all about. The plot was described in such perfect detail. I could really envision the scenes and where the characters where in each moment. It also gave me time to pick and choose my favourite characters and not so favourite.

thumbnail_IMG_3674I  found myself even before the creepy moments started working around in my head who I thought was going to be killed first and potentially how they were going to die.

You know….just based on your typical slasher film rules. You know … those rules….If you don’t… than I don’t think you are a true slasher films lover!

Cameron’s description for both the characters and the settings were phenomenal and without being overly wordy. I felt as though I was seeing everything Cyndi and her friends where in the moment, right down to the beautifully landscaped water park decorated with the perfect wildflowers and other designs. Now this may become to hard for some to read when the murder scenes start. They did get extremely gruesome at times, so be sure you have a good strong stomach…. I can’t stress this enough.

These reads are not for everyone. But if you want to experience some of that 80’s slasher film nostalgic feels be sure to pick up both Kill River and its amazing sequel Kill River 2.

4 out of 5 stars

If you know anything about David Koepp or have read up on him. Koepp is an American screenwriter and director. Best known for his work on Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Panic Room and War of Worlds.

I could completely see Cold Storage being adapted into film. It absolutely read like a movie setting.

You start off with your flash back into 1987, where you are introduced to the organism and find out just how much destruction it can cause.

Flash forward into the modern day and in comes new characters that are completely in the dark and have no idea what exactly is in the sub-level of this building or the awful things that happened decades ago.

Until the story takes a harsh turn, bringing the experienced together with the inexperienced in a rush to save humanity.

The reason for me knocking 1 star from my rating was how slow the plot and character growth was, at least after the original impressive flash back in 1987. The next few chapters seem to drag on a bit. Also some content in my opinion felt like unneeded story filler. But I tell you, once you get through the slow gap in the first half of the book it really starts picking up.

thumbnail_IMG_3406Cold Storage becomes chilling. I felt I couldn’t put the book down until I knew exactly what happened and if the trio was successful.

The outcome was exactly what I was hoping for and that is not always the case when reading a book. This was very refreshing.

If you are a lover of scifi, horror, mystery, thriller. I think you will devour Cold Storage.

I would love to see Cold Storage on the big screen one day.

5 out of 5 stars

Cannibal Nuns From Outer Space is truly one of a kind.

The nuns are a force to be reckoned with……….“That is one ugly mother…”

Father Flynn is a bad-ass in his own……….“Anyone out of the Old Testament, Beards were very much in vogue back then.”

With all the trash, all the cheese (and I don’t mean cheap ass cheese, I am talking the high end, expensive stinky cheese) and gut wrenching laughs. This is a grade A classy book for anyone’s book shelves. I don’t think I have had so much fun reading something in a very long time. Now this book is not for everyone, but if you have a tremendous sense of humour, you don’t mind a bit of crude content and are up for a little bit of gore splashed with a whole lot of hilarious moments, look no further!… Cannibal Nuns from Outer Space is for you.

5126kcuRgmL._SY346_Now not only is the guts of the book fan-freaking-tastic but the physical book is glorious! Depending on the edition you get….(may I suggest the Hardcover special edition copy). The book reads just as a B movie. You get the play button, movie previews (which all need to be brought to book), movie posters. Then of course you have a soundtrack and end credits. Now if you go the route I suggested and get the hard cover special edition you also receive alternate endings and a few other little jazzy features.

Find out if Father Flynn saves the day. See if you can spot which Nun’s are good vs evil. Spend some one on one time with Phil De Hole and fall in love with Albie.

So happy that I read Cannibal Nuns from Outer Space with my fellow BookTubers. This has easily become one of my most talked about favourites in my 2019 reading year.

And of course thank you all for reading.
